Can Livedale cut foam to my exact size and shape?

Yes. Livedale provides foam cut to size for replacement cushions, seating pads, benches, window seats, caravans, campervans, boats and general upholstery projects.

You can choose from standard shapes, enter your measurements and select the foam grade and finishing options required. Bespoke shapes can also be produced from a clear drawing or template, subject to the shape and material being suitable for production.

How do I choose the right foam grade?

The best foam depends on where it will be used, the cushion thickness, the amount of use it will receive and whether you prefer a soft, medium or firm feel.

Sofa and chair seats normally need supportive upholstery foam that will retain its shape. Back cushions and comfort layers may use a softer grade, while thin seat pads, stools and heavier-use seating often need something firmer.

If you are unsure, contact Livedale with the cushion dimensions, intended use and preferred feel before ordering.

What is the difference between foam density and firmness?

Foam density and firmness are not the same thing.

Density relates to the amount of foam material within a given volume and is an important factor in support and durability. Firmness describes how soft or firm the surface of the foam feels when compressed.

A high-density foam can still be made with a softer feel, while a lower-density foam can be manufactured to feel firm. Both properties should therefore be considered when choosing upholstery foam.

What foam is best for a sofa seat cushion?

For an everyday sofa seat, a good-quality medium or medium-firm upholstery foam is normally the best starting point. It should provide enough support to prevent the cushion bottoming out while remaining comfortable.

The final feel will also be affected by the cushion thickness, furniture base, fabric tension, Dacron wrap and the size of the person using it. A foam that feels firm at 2 inches thick may feel quite different at 5 inches thick.

For the best recommendation, provide Livedale with the finished cushion measurements and explain whether you want a softer, medium or firmer seat.

How should I measure a replacement foam cushion?

Remove the existing cushion interior and lay the empty cover on a flat surface.

Measure from seam to seam, or between the piping on a box cushion. Measure the width, front-to-back depth and border thickness, checking more than one point where the cover is shaped or uneven.

Do not rely on the dimensions of old foam that has become compressed or misshapen. The cushion cover is normally the more reliable guide.

Can Livedale work from a drawing or physical template?

Yes. A drawing can be used for many straightforward bespoke shapes, provided all measurements, curves and relevant angles are clearly shown.

For complex shapes, bay-window cushions, boat cushions or irregular seating, a full-size physical template is usually more accurate. Mark the template clearly with the top, front, back and any joining edges before sending it.

What are Dacron and stockinette?

Dacron is a polyester wadding wrapped around foam to soften the edges and give the finished cushion a fuller, smoother appearance.

Stockinette is a stretchable sleeve fitted over the foam or Dacron-wrapped cushion. It helps hold the filling together and allows the cushion to slide into the cover more easily, reducing friction and snagging.

Do I need Dacron and stockinette on my replacement cushions?

Dacron is generally recommended for loose sofa and chair cushions where a softer, more rounded finish is wanted. It helps reduce the hard square appearance that bare foam can create beneath the fabric.

Stockinette is particularly useful when the cushion cover is close-fitting or when Dacron has been added. Simple fixed seat pads, dining chair pads and foam that will be permanently upholstered may not always require either option.

Do you supply foam for caravans, campervans and boats?

Yes. Foam cut to size can be produced for caravan cushions, campervan seating, rock-and-roll beds, boat seating, cabin cushions and shaped sleeping areas.

The correct foam will depend on the available thickness, whether the cushion is mainly used for sitting or sleeping and whether it may be exposed to damp conditions. Specialist reticulated foam is also available for suitable outdoor and moisture-prone applications.

Should I order a standard foam cushion or foam cut to size?

Choose a standard foam cushion when one of the listed sizes, thicknesses and foam grades matches your requirements. This is particularly useful for repeat trade orders and common cushion sizes.

Choose foam cut to size when you need a non-standard measurement, unusual thickness, shaped cushion, bay-window seat, caravan cushion or replacement foam made to fit an existing cover.

What upholstery products does Livedale supply?

Livedale supplies foam and fillings, springs & webbing, upholstery tools, staples and fixings, fabrics, feet, castors, woodcare products and general workroom sundries.

The range is suitable for professional upholsterers, furniture manufacturers, repair workshops, interior projects and customers completing their own furniture repairs.

Does Livedale sell to the public as well as trade customers?

Yes. Products can be ordered by both members of the public and professional customers.

Eligible upholsterers, furniture manufacturers and other businesses can register for a trade account to access applicable trade pricing. Selected standard foam cushions also have additional volume pricing for approved trade customers.

Has Livedale acquired Foam4U and The Foam Shop?

Yes. Livedale Foam & Sundries has acquired Foam4U and TheFoamShop.co.uk.

The acquisition brings together established foam and upholstery experience and gives customers access to a wider range of foam, cushion and upholstery products.

How quickly will my order be dispatched?

Standard website orders are generally dispatched on the following working day using a next-day courier service.

Bespoke, cut-to-size or manufactured products may require additional production time. Any estimated dispatch or delivery information shown on the relevant product page should be checked before ordering.

How much does delivery cost?

Orders over £150 are currently delivered carriage free, excluding products or locations that attract a delivery surcharge.

Orders below £150 currently have a £12.95 carriage charge applied. The final delivery charge should be confirmed during checkout.

Can I return foam that has been cut to size?

Bespoke goods, including foam manufactured or cut to your measurements, are excluded from the standard right to cancel because they have been made specifically for you.

For this reason, measurements, foam grade and finishing options should be checked carefully before placing the order. Standard non-bespoke goods may be returned under the applicable returns policy, provided the required conditions are met.

What should I do if my order arrives damaged or incorrect?

Check the parcel and products as soon as they arrive. Any visible shortage or damage should be recorded with the courier where possible.

Contact Livedale promptly if the goods are damaged, faulty or not as described. Where appropriate, Livedale will arrange collection and send replacements as quickly as possible.

Can I speak to someone before placing my order?

Yes. Livedale has a UK-based team that can help with foam grades, cushion fillings, upholstery materials and specialist applications.

Calling before ordering is sensible when you have an unusual shape, are uncertain about firmness or need several products to complete an upholstery project.
